Before & After: Beach Huts Nursery

I love children's bedrooms. It is such a joy to design spaces where little ones will play and explore for years to come! Plus the use of pattern, colour and fun elements, it doesn't get any better.

I have recently finished my baby daughter's nursery. We were so busy prior to her arrival that I had to finish decorating it after she was born. The painting had been already done, so what was left to do was hanging wallpaper and styling during nap times, literally. It took me about a week to hang wallpaper on one wall (ok it is a big wall!) hanging one to two lengths a day. We got there in the end and the room is now a delightful nursery.

The room had become a storage/dumping space when we moved in, housing all the boxes that we didn't bother unpacking plus all the stuff that I had to donate and pass on and didn't get round to. So clearing it up took a while (as everything does when you're pregnant and looking after a toddler!)

This is what the room looked like when we moved in:

Not to my taste at all and in serious need of re-decorating. The combo of red and black, stained walls and that light fixture (where did that even come from?) So we started by having all the walls, ceiling and wood work painted in white (by 'we', I mean Mr Room Alive spend three whole days painting!) Sounds very plain so far, hang in there as it'll get interesting.

My starting point was our very own Beach Huts wallpaper, and I started picking accessories and pieces that would go with the soft pastel colours in it. I went straight to Instagram to find other small business mamas who make and sell some great pieces. More about that below! There are so many gorgeous decor accessories in pastel colours for kids bedrooms available, it was hard narrowing it down to those that were really special to earn a spot in her nursery.

We already had the furniture, and I have also used a few decorating pieces that we already owned and up-cycled others to make them really unique to this space.

After: The Reveal

Here is how the nursery looks now:

It is now a calm and tranquil nursery, which is spacious,  fun and will grow with her. Some of the items I chose are 'grown-up' ones such as the pink rug from La Redoute,  the light pendant (I bought this one ages ago on eBay for another room and finally got to use it) and the bookcase. We also decided to use the sofa bed instead of a rocking chair. Practically speaking, I never sit down in her room to feed because I simply don't have time to as I do everything in our living areas where I can keep company to my oldest daughter. This sofa bed from Made.com was very useful when my eldest was teething - so it's ready to be used that much all over again! The bookcase is also from Made.com.

This wall will grow with her as the shelf and the hook are the only things attached to the wall! I painted the Ikeabook ledge in mint green and it makes a perfect match.

On the shelf I have added a selection of our own Beach Hut Frames along with one that I made with origami bird stickers from Nutmeg wall art. The felt ball garland from Stone & Co was customised and pulls all the colours together beautifully.

The pastel hooks are from Maisons Du Monde (similar here), and I have added a super cute #MILKY T-shirt from Baby Dee & Me, a cloud mobile from The White Company and one of her teething necklaces from our shop. The Sleepy Eyes sticker is by Nutmeg wall art

The paper storage bag by Hello Henry can be found here and the house shelf propped on the floor is from The Range.

Another one from another talented Instagram mum and shop owner, the bedding is from BD and Max.

The ceiling paper cloud mobile is one we already had from my oldest daughter's nursery, I love that it is made of paper and the white contrasts well with the wallpaper.

Here are a few more photos of our special nursery. I hope you are enjoying it, let me know what's your favourite part of the nursery in the comments below!
